Can I Have Anal Sex After an Anal Fissure!??!

Dear Couch,

I have always enjoyed anal sex. My boyfriend and I are engaging in this practice quite regularly but I am a little worried. A few years ago I had surgery to correct an anal fissure. Quite a nasty painful experience. Years before I had the surgery I engaged in anal sex semi regularly, but the fissure was a problem many years before I started with any anal-erotic play. The fissure was apparently caused by stress, but I am worried of it recurring. So far I haven't noticed any more anal pain or bleeding than usual, which isn't much at all. I certainly don't want to deprive myself of this deliciously naughty sexual practice. Could you help ease my mind in any way?

Dear Anally Concerned,

Having a history of anal fissures shouldn't prevent you from engaging in anal play. However, you do need to be very careful. If you're having any bleeding or pain with bowel movements at all, you should hold off. Also you need to watch your diet and take measures (like making sure you get enough water and fiber intake) not to have chronic constipation or diarrheal problems. We'll also refer you to the Ten Rules of Anal Sex and say LUBE LUBE LUBE!!!!! We're also pointing you to a great book, Anal Pleasure and Health: A Guide for Men and Women by Jack Morin Ph.D.which includes information on ' to contribute to your own healing when you have medical problems' Of course, our last word on this is to ask your doctor. We emphasize to our readers not to be embarrassed regarding sexually related questions when seeing your doctor.
